Question

Solve the system: 2x + y = 11 and x - y = 1

Answer

x = 4, y = 3

Steps

  1. 1The y terms are already opposites, so elimination is the fastest route.
  2. 2Add the equations: (2x + y) + (x - y) = 11 + 1, which gives 3x = 12.
  3. 3Divide by 3: x = 4.
  4. 4Substitute into the simpler equation: 4 - y = 1, so y = 3.
  5. 5Check in the other equation: 2(4) + 3 = 11. Correct.

Pick the equation that is easier to rearrange for the substitution step. Here x - y = 1 needs one operation; 2x + y = 11 needs two.

What it will not do

  • It will not sit your algebra test with you.
  • It will not know your teacher's preferred method unless you ask for one. Say elimination and it will use elimination.
  • It will not fix an equation you copied down wrong. Snap the original, not your transcription.
  • It will not make you fluent. Do the practice set afterwards.

Questions people ask

Can I ask for a specific method?
Yes. Ask for elimination instead of substitution, or completing the square instead of the quadratic formula, and it will rework the problem that way. Follow-up questions are a Pro feature.
Does it handle word problems that turn into algebra?
Yes, and it shows the set-up as its own step: what each variable stands for, and where each equation came from in the sentence.
What about systems with three variables?
Yes, by elimination, with the intermediate two-variable system written out.
Will it check my answer instead of solving it?
Select your working and ask whether it is right. It will find the first line that breaks rather than just marking the final answer wrong.
