Best AI tools
for algebra
Algebra help splits into three jobs that no single tool does well: getting unstuck on this problem, drilling until the method is automatic, and seeing what the equation looks like. Mixing them up is why people install four apps and learn nothing.
Disclosure: Solvecoon is our own product and it is on this list. Checked August 2026.
How we judged them
- Does it show every rearrangement, or jump to the answer?
- Does it check the solution by substituting back?
- Does it support practice as well as answers?
- Can it read a problem from an image?
- Is it free at the level a school student needs?
The list
Solvecoon
OursBest for: finding the exact line you got wrong
Every step names the operation applied to both sides, and the last step substitutes the solution back into the original equation. Select your own working and it will find the first line that breaks rather than only marking the answer wrong.
Watch out: It is a solver and explainer, not a practice platform. Do the drills elsewhere.
Khan Academy
Best for: drilling until it is automatic
Free structured algebra units with hints, mastery practice, and prerequisites mapped out, which is exactly what a solver cannot give you.
Watch out: It will not answer your specific homework question, by design.
Desmos
Best for: seeing the equation
Free graphing that makes roots, intercepts, and transformations obvious in a way that no amount of algebra notation does.
Watch out: Shows you the picture; will not write the steps.
Symbolab
Best for: heavier symbolic manipulation
A dedicated engine with algebra calculators for factoring, systems, inequalities, and simplification.
Watch out: Best step-by-step is behind Pro, and problems must be typed in.
Wolfram Alpha
Best for: checking an answer you doubt
Reliable computation with a huge domain, useful as a second opinion when two sources disagree.
Watch out: Its syntax is a barrier, and step-by-step is paid.
Questions people ask
- What is the best free algebra solver?
- For steps on every problem without paying, Solvecoon on the free plan. For learning the topic properly rather than clearing tonight's sheet, Khan Academy.
- Will using a solver hurt my algebra?
- It will if you read the answer and move on. It helps if you attempt the problem first, then compare your working line by line and find where yours diverged.
- Which handles word problems?
- Any tool that shows the translation from sentence to equation. That set-up step is the actual difficulty, not the arithmetic afterwards.
- Do I need a graphing tool as well?
- For quadratics, transformations, and systems, yes. Desmos is free and makes the shape obvious in a way no solver does.
