Best AI math
solvers in 2026
Math tools fail in a specific way: the answer is right and useless, because the steps are paywalled or because getting the problem into the tool took longer than solving it. These are ranked on both of those, not on marketing claims.
Disclosure: Solvecoon is our own product and it is on this list. Checked August 2026.
How we judged them
- How you enter a problem, and whether notation has to be retyped.
- Whether step-by-step working is free or a paid upgrade.
- How it handles problems that are images rather than text.
- Whether it explains why a method applies, not only how it runs.
- Coverage from arithmetic through calculus.
The list
Solvecoon
OursBest for: math that lives in a PDF or an image
Snap the expression instead of retyping it, which matters more than it sounds: exponents, fraction bars, and integral bounds are layout, and layout is exactly what copy-paste destroys. Steps are free on every solve, including the substitution check at the end.
Watch out: It does not graph. For plotting and heavy symbolic manipulation, use a dedicated engine.
Symbolab
Best for: deep symbolic math
A specialised math engine with a calculator for nearly every topic, natural-language and photo input, plus mobile apps and a browser extension.
Watch out: The best step-by-step depth sits behind the Pro upgrade.
Wolfram Alpha
Best for: trustworthy computation
Computational rather than generative, which means when it has a method it is reliable, across an enormous range of technical topics.
Watch out: Its input syntax is a skill of its own, and step-by-step is a paid feature.
Photomath
Best for: problems on paper
Point a phone camera at a handwritten or printed problem and get the solution with explanations. The original camera math solver, and still the best fit when the work is on paper.
Watch out: It is a phone app, so it does not help with math that lives in a browser tab on your laptop.
Desmos
Best for: seeing what a function does
A free graphing calculator that is genuinely excellent, and the fastest way to build intuition about a function's shape, roots, and turning points.
Watch out: It is not a solver. It shows you the picture; it will not write the working.
Khan Academy
Best for: learning the topic, not passing the question
Free structured lessons, hints, and mastery practice. If the reason you are stuck is a missing prerequisite, this is the fix and no solver is.
Watch out: It will not answer your specific homework problem, and that is deliberate.
Questions people ask
- Which math solver shows steps for free?
- Solvecoon shows steps on every solve, including on the free plan. Symbolab and Wolfram Alpha both put their deepest step-by-step behind a subscription.
- What is best for handwritten math?
- Photomath if it is on paper and you have a phone. Solvecoon if it is a scan or photo already open in a browser tab.
- Do I still need a graphing calculator?
- For visualising functions, yes. Desmos is free and better at that job than any solver, including ours.
- Which is best for calculus?
- For raw symbolic power, Wolfram Alpha or Symbolab. For understanding which rule applies and why, a tool that names the rule in the working, which is how Solvecoon writes calculus answers.
